South Australian Screen Awards Nominees Announced

This year’s South Australian Screen Awards (SASA) will mark 15 years of quality film-making in the state.

This year’s South Australian Screen Awards (SASA) will mark 15 years of quality film-making in the state. South Australia’s most prestigious film awards have prizes across nine categories, with a further eight “craft awards” for the best behind the scenes. There is over $20,000 on offer overall, with the Media Resource Centre introducing a $3000 prize for Best Feature. For this main award, there are only two nominees: The Dead Speak Back and Sophie Hyde’s 52 Tuesdays. 52 Tuesdays collected the Crystal Bear at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival and saw Hyde win best director in the World Category at Sundance 2014. Hyde previously earned a SASA for best short film in 2007. The inclusion of a new category, Best Web Series, is a sign of the times, and a ‘non-narrative’ category recognises films that experiment beyond traditional storytelling structures. This year, there are no nominees for Emerging Young Filmmaker or Emerging Producer, and also no nominees for Innovation in Digital Media. SASA will present the awards at a ticketed gala night at The Mercury Cinema on Friday, May 16. Following this, there will be ‘best of’ screenings at The Mercury from Saturday, May 17, to Sunday, May 25. Full list of SASA nominees: Best Short Film Deluge (prod./dir.
