Pippett in the Pod: Mum’s the Word

Adelaide artist and Mint Artist Studios co-founder Jenna Pippett will feature in a new exhibition held at the Adelaide City Council’s Art Pod on Pirie Street.

Adelaide artist Jenna Pippett will feature in a new exhibition held at the Adelaide City Council’s Art Pod. The exhibition, titled My Mother’s Mother’s, Daughter’s Daughter, continues Ms Pippett’s work in the themes of family heritage. The Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) graduate superimposes images of herself over pictures of her mother and family, highlighting the similarities and differences in the generations. Ms Pippett explains, ‘I’ve titled the show at Art Pod, My Mother’s Mother’s, Daughter’s Daughter. As the title suggests, the work kind of loops through three generations of women in my family: my grandmother, mother and myself. The work draws upon the notion of things that get passed down through generations, be it genetic qualities or anecdotes.’ The local artist and co-founder of Mint Artist Studios won the City of Adelaide Award in the Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition in 2013. The prize included $3000 and the use of the Art Pod for an exhibition. ‘I’m looking forward to presenting this body of work at Art Pod; the facilities and location are a massive draw card for the new exhibition space. It’s great exposure for other emerging artists like myself and enable them to engage with a wider audience.’ Read our profile of Jenna Pippett here. The photographs above are still-frames taken from Ms Pippett’s video Mother Mask 2, which will be projected on the Art Pod’s main LED monitor. Two smaller framed works and larger prints will also be on display in the new gallery space. The glass Pod space spans the breezeway wall at 25 Pirie St between the Town Hall and the ACC customer centre, acting as public gallery space 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Art Pod is a new public art grant initiative run by the Council, and is currently being curated by Carollyn Kavanagh. ‘My planned curatorial program includes large group exhibitions for SALA, an Adelaide Fringe survey exhibition of local female emerging and established artists specialising in portraiture called Not Just a Pretty Face, and a collaboration with History SA which will use Adelaide Town Hall’s civic collection as the subject for the creation of new contemporary art,’ Ms Cavanagh says. Adelaide City Council General Manager of City Culture and Community Services Sandy Verschoor says that Art Pod will provide ‘new, creative opportunities’ for artists, recent graduates and emerging curators. The project will hopefully encourage people to come to the city and brighten up the public space. My Mother’s Mother’s, Daughter’s Daughter will be the fourth Art Pod exhibition, and will run from Wednesday, November 6 until Tuesday, December 3.
