2013 Cabaret Fringe Festival

The sixth annual Cabaret Fringe Festival will mark the beginning of Adelaide’s winter cabaret season on June 1, and will consist of a month-long and city-wide entertainment program celebrating art through performance up until June 29.

Ranging from musicals and variety shows to comedy and contortion, this year’s program features an entirely South Australian line-up made up of 40 different shows across 14 Adelaide venues (including McLaren Vale).

According to the 2013 Cabaret Fringe Festival Director, Annie Morris, audiences are in for more quirkiness this year than ever before, starting with The Amazing Cristina...

“Along with nationally successful home-grown cabaret legends like Libby O’Donovan – who celebrates the musical bonds between mother and child with her beautiful new show ‘Songs Only A Mother Could Love’, we have some rather unconventional acts including a show by The Amazing Cristina,” Morris says. “She is a 68-year-old contortionist from Christies Beach who quite literally bends over backwards to entertain her audience!”

Among the highlights of 2013 will be ‘Girl on the Drink: From Gutter to Glamour in Satire And Song’ from Annie Siegmann, the debut solo show from ‘Australian Idol’ and ‘The Voice’ finalist Sarah Lloyde, and the rousing ‘Me ‘N Me Mates’, just to name a few. In addition, kids will be treated to ‘The Musical Adventures of Popeye and Olive’ – which encourages audiences to dress up as sailors – and the inspirational musical, ‘A Vision’, which is a tribute to children suffering from Leukaemia.

Paul Boylon, the founder and director of the Cabaret Fringe Festival, says the 2013 event caters to different ages, special interest groups, and a range of musical and artistic preferences.

“Ticket prices are all $30 and under,” he states. “Also, with eight new venues this year – including McLaren Vale’s The Singing Gallery, as well as non-traditional cabaret settings like The Popeye, The Arkaba Hotel and The Australian Centre for Social Innovation – we hope to widen the cabaret audience in Adelaide and show how this art form can be performed in any style, anywhere.”
