Review: The Audreys

The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – Paradiso Spiegeltent, Wednesday, February 19

In their one-off Paradiso Spiegeltent show, Adelaide folk-rock royalty The Audreys played pared-down versions of both old and new songs. Being bandless for the night highlighted Taasha Coates’ exceptionally beautiful voice and Tristan Goodall’s versatility on guitar. The easy onstage banter between the two is a real treat. But it is easy to compliment The Audreys on these things – they are known for them after all. More interesting to me was that as a song writing duo, Coates and Goodall seem to be at the height of their powers. The new material from Til My Tears Roll Away (due for release on Fri Mar 14) shows a grittier side to the band as they move effortlessly between brittle pain (Roll Away), acerbic, sardonic observation (Ballad For The Fallen) and back to stunning trance-like ballads. It’s a rare privilege to see such a powerful combination of talent scale new heights. Rating: **** *This review also appears on Rip It Up
