Since the late 80s, travel and history writer Bill Bryson has charmed us with his wit and intelligence. The good-natured Anglophile is coming to Australia next March for a national stage tour: Bill Bryson—Many A True Word, An Illuminating Interview. ‘I can’t wait to come back to Australia,’ Bryson says. ‘It is always a pleasure to be there.’ The American author’s most successful works include Notes From A Small Island (1995), Down Under (2000) and A Short History of Nearly Everything (2003). Beyond travel, history and science, Bryson has also explored biography and language. The Life & Times Of The Thunderbolt Kid (2006) is his hilarious memoir, which introduces his childhood alterego ‘the Thunderbolt Kid’ who had the imaginative power to vaporise people with a ray-gun. The book describes his early life in Des Moines, Iowa, while also examining the culture and history of America in the 1950s and 60s. His most recent book, One Summer: America 1927, was published in October through Doubleday/Random House. Looking at the season when the USA ‘came of age’, One Summer takes 560 extravagant pages to address the rose-cheeked glamour and hope of early 20th century America. Many A True Word, An Illuminating Interview will be an evening of conversation with Ray Martin, delving into Bryson’s life, his books and his knowledge. The event will be held on Thursday, March 20 at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. Tickets range from $85.00 to $185.00 and go on sale Tuesday, November 19 through Ticketek (132 849).
