World Music Series returns to Nexus

April 2013

Global music doesn’t end when WOMADelaide finishes (to paraphrase Adelaide Comedy’s successful catchphrase) as Nexus Multicultural Art Centre’s World Music Series returns next month.

First held in 2012, the World Music Series will host acclaimed local, national and international guests over the next few months for its 2013 program. Running from Friday, May 10 to Friday, June 21 artists include Mark Ferguson, Julian Ferraretto, Zephyr Quartet, The Bearded Gypsy Band and internationally renowned tabla player Bobby Singh.

New to this year’s program is the Nexus World Music Commission, which brings together two artists with the aim of exploring their cultural heritage through music. The first commission features Adelaide composer and pianist Mark Ferguson, who will work with violinist Julian Ferraretto, to explore Ferguson’s Scottish folk heritage. The work will premiere at Nexus on Friday, June 14. Another highlight is the launch of Bobby Singh, Adrian McNeal and Damina Wright’s new album Rasa Duende on Friday, June 21.

Nexus’ music program manager Ross McHenry said Nexus was humbled by the response to last year’s program.

“The success of the inaugural season really demonstrated how much the Adelaide music scene has to offer,” he said in a press release. “I’m constantly blown away by the depth, quality and diversity of the performers in this city and I’m really excited to share some of these wonderful artists through the Nexus World Music Series in 2013.”
