The Oscar-winning actor and director – best known for films such as ‘The Great Escape’, ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Gandhi’ – has been reported dead by his son over the weekend.

Oscar-winning British actor and director Richard Attenborough has been reported dead by his son at the age of 90. Lord Attenborough, brother of famed naturalist David, leaves a lengthy and impressive filmography behind. His acting credits span seven decades, highlighted by his roles in World War Two thriller The Great Escape and Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic Park. As a director, his crowning achievement is the 1982 film Gandhi, which won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. According to the BBC, Attenborough had been confined to a wheelchair for the past six years after falling down a flight of stairs. His family is expected to make a full statement in the coming days. In a raft of Twitter tributes, British Prime Minister David Cameron has described Attenborough as “one of the greats of cinema”, while Mia Farrow said he was “the kindest man I have ever had the privilege of working with.”
