Ink Crush Brings Local Creatives to Market

Flinders Street Market is bringing back it’s most popular local graphics, design and illustration market event this July: Ink Crush.

Open every weekend since its launch in 1999, Flinders Street Market has long been a shopping hotspot for Adelaide’s handmade crafts and vintage apparel. Working with the theme of Ink Crush next month, the market is set showcase local talent in graphic arts, design and illustration. Promising an “eclectic mix of stalls” the market invites artwork from all creative facets, including but not limited to paper crafts, drawings, stamp design, crochet bags and elegantly elvish notebooks. Visitors are encouraged to partake in the design workshops on offer as well. Moving away from the archetypal market scene, Flinders prides itself on fostering local talent while helping “keep traditional skills alive.” Emblematic for its contributions to South Australia’s economy, the market is “the coalface of small creative businesses” in turn raising “the quality of life” in the state. For illustrator Zinia King, this year’s event will be her first, showcasing illustrations of Australian flora and fauna on a range of prints, cards, postcards and bookmarks. The artist uses felt tip pen in creating her works, with compliments of coloured pencil, watercolour and digital work. “I love the portability and simplicity of the medium,” says King. Aside from their contributions to Adelaide’s shopping scene, another part of Flinders houses stalls that align with their message of reusable, recyclable gifts —making it unique from its competitors. Whether school or tertiary students, fervent hobbyists or those of creative genes alike, all are welcome to host a standard or mini stall, with bookings available via the Flinders Street Market website.
