Punch Brothers to headline Adelaide Guitar Festival offshoot

Punch Brothers to headline Adelaide Guitar Festival offshoot

The biennial celebration of the six-string returns in the offseason for a short and sweet program led by American bluegrass innovators Punch Brothers.

The New York group and 2016 Adelaide Guitar Festival headliners will perform at the Woodville Town Hall on Sunday, July 14 as part of a national tour also announced today. The group’s Grammy-winning fifth album All Ashore came after a period of hiatus which saw member Chris Thile become the host of popular podcast A Prairie Home Companion, now named Live From Here.

This ‘special edition’ series of concerts is uncharted territory for the Guitar Festival with its firsts ticketed shows to be held outside of its regular schedule, which last year brought Tommy Emmanuel, Albert Lee and the Beijing Guitar Duo to town.

“Adelaide Guitar Festival is the most significant festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and continues to be extremely popular,” artistic director Slava Grigoryan says of the 2019 programming. “We want to continue to build momentum for the next full program in 2020 and at the same time, make music more accessible. We are thrilled to have musicians of this calibre performing in July, which will compliment Guitars in Bars, Winter School, Adelaide International Classical Guitar Competition and Resonance, which are held each year.”

In addition to the Punch Brothers, who will play the Woodville Town Hall on July 14 as part of a national tour announced today, the festival will see performances from internationally feted Australian guitarist Karin Schaupp and Adelaide International Classical Guitar Competition winner Miles Johnston at Space Theatre on July 16.

Blues travellers Jeff Lang and Call Williams Jr round out the program with a Space Theatre performance on July 17. Additionally, the return of Guitars In Bars as part of Umbrella: Winter City Sounds festival will ensure the twang and strum of a guitar can be heard in bars and venues all around the city in July.
