Meet Your Maker: a.nouk

Creative chameleon Joslin Koolen describes herself as a “gatherer of all things eclectic, bold and disparate”.

With a rich and diverse background that includes spending much of her childhood travelling with her Dutch family, Koolen is adaptive and responsive both in her approach to her practice and the creative process. She describes the progression of her professional practice, from interior design to floristry to product design and styling, as a response to listening to and following her creative desires. Today she is the artist/designer/stylist behind a.nouk. a.nouk-well-made-adelaide-review Combining Koolen’s creative passions, a.nouk offers interior and event styling services complemented by a collection of bespoke, locally produced vessels and stands as well as one–off exhibition pieces and prints. While tailoring their services to suit the individual or brand, a.nouk’s focus is on enhancing spaces with the tone, texture and dynamism of contemporary plant and floral installations. Koolen has extensive experience in the area having created floral arrangements for weddings and events for over a decade in her previous role at the helm of My Greengoddess. Nourishing Koolen’s interest in product design and complementing her passion for the botanical, a.nouk also produces a collection of Plant Cultuur vessels and stands. Named in honour of her Dutch heritage, the collection includes a range of copper and concrete bud vases and mini planters, as well as a series of sculptural, geometric stands. The collection is entirely handmade in Adelaide and reflects Koolen’s commitment to keeping it local. a.nouk-well-made-adelaide-review a.nouk’s recent work includes transforming an old railway shed for a wedding. The two large–scale contemporary installations created for the event were suspended from the rafters and designed to complement the angles of the voluminous space and the energy and vibrancy of the celebration. a.nouk showcased the Plant Cultuur collection at this month’s Bowerbird and will be presenting an exhibition of abstract art later in the year. a.nouk is featured on the Well Made website.
