The spellbinding magic of sitar virtuoso Ustad Sujaat Khan meets the pulsating rhythms of tabla maestro Jay Dagbar in a special performance at Nexus Arts.

Sitar master Ustad Shujaat Khan has travelled the world performing in Asia, Africa, North America and Europe. His approach is intuitive, fresh and spontaneous, always astonishing his audiences. He is also known for his exceptional voice, which he uses for singing folk songs, including the album Lajo Lajo, as well as poetry, as in Hazaron Khwaishen.

His memorable appearances include performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Royce Hall in Los Angeles and Congress Hall in Berlin. He is known as a fearless collaborator, having performed with artists as diverse as Karsh Kale and pioneer Hindustani vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan. His collaboration with different genres of music has been evidenced by the enormously successful Indo-Persian venture, the Ghazal Ensemble. Their album ‘Rain’ was nominated for a Grammy award in 2004.

Born in 1981 into a family of tabla makers in India, Jay Dabgar has been living in an environment of music and instruments since childhood. Jay plays with many different artists from different backgrounds in Indian Classical, Semi Classical, Fusion and World music in Australia and teaches tabla and other percussion at his centre ‘Melbourne School of Indian Music’. He has performed at many prestigious concerts both as a soloist as well as in accompaniment with different forms of music, and has received awards at several national and state levels, including a scholarship from the Government of India.
