Africola, Young Henrys Collaborate on New Beer

Africola owner and Head Chef Duncan Welgemoed’s punk rock gastronomy reputation precedes him, so it was with little shock that the co-owner of brewers Young Henrys Brewing Company, Oscar McMahon wanted to work with him.

Young Henrys Brewing Company and Africola’s Duncan Welgemoed have together brewed a new limited release beer: Africola Rock ‘N’ Rola. The punk rock gastronomy aesthetic of Welgemoed (Africola owner and head chef) and the rock ‘n’ roll vibe of craft brewers Young Henrys are a perfect match, so it was no wonder that Young Henrys co-owner Oscar McMahon wanted to work with Welgemoed. “Duncan has the madness of mind and the rock ‘n’ roll spirit that we love to be around,” McMahon says. “He’s also a bloody good cook who doesn’t mind the occasional one or two. After we met him we knew we’d have to do a beer together sometime.” After an encounter between Young Henrys and Welgemoed, McMahon paired the South African expat with Hamish McKenzie, one of Young Henrys rising young brewers. McKenzie took on the mission of bottling Welgemoed’s unconventional approach with a mix of Young Henry’s own forward-thinking style. Young-Henrys-Africola-Collaborate-Beer-Adelaide-Review The team struck gold when they discovered Welgemoed’s love for Michelada, a Mexican cocktail combining lime, beer and hot sauce. From there, McKenzie brewed up the Africola Rock ‘N’ Rola. Citrus, spice and smooth-drinking are said to characterise the brand new beverage, and Young Henrys promise this dark amber brew is a “stone cold classic” of the genre. Africola Rock ‘N’ Rola will be launched tonight at the Beer and BBQ Festival, and will go into limited release pouring at venues across Adelaide and the country soon after. adelaidebeerfest.com.au younghenrys.com africola.com.au
