By The Glass: Greta Wohlstadt on the journey from a dairy farm to Australia's best restaurant

Restaurant Orana and Bistro Blackwood’s Greta Wohlstadt chats about her journey from life on a Barossa dairy farm to managing Australia’s best restaurant, and the goals of The Orana Foundation.

Awarded the top gong by Gourmet Traveller, Restaurant Orana is the first establishment outside of Victoria and New South Wales to be named Australia’s Best Restaurant in over two decades. Orana’s philosophy celebrates the nutritional properties of Indigenous ingredients and respects the produce’s relationship with the land.

For Wohsltadt, it’s something she and her team are intensely passionate about.

“I can’t stop,” she says. “It’s such a massive thing, it’s very important to me and to every single person that works in that building, we’re such passionate humans. We’re driving to create an Australian cuisine – so how can you turn your back on that?”

Chef and Owner Jock Zonfrillo’s bold approach in bringing a unique flair to the hospitality industry in South Australia has paid dividends, and Wohlstadt believes that Adelaide is on the cusp of something truly special.

“The scene in Adelaide at the moment, things are changing. Restaurants that have been around some time now are thriving, places that opened that were tiny five years ago are expanding. People want to come here, chefs and hospitality workers want to come here.”
