Wine Review: A Shiver Down the Spine from Whistler Wines

Changes have occurred in the vineyards; organic practices are employed with the view of adding in biodynamic farming to strengthen the vineyard soils. New wines too, with the Next Gen range definitely striking a chord with me.  The 2014 Shiver Down My Spine Shiraz displays all of the classic Barossa characters you would expect but the natural ferment and addition of 20 percent whole bunches open the wine up, letting more light in and as a result gives it a more spacious mouthfeel and sense of clarity of aromas and flavours. Deep red/purple in the glass with lifted aromas of dark plum and black berry fruits underscored with Asian spice, a dash of pepper, purple flowers, licorice and that funky, high–toned edge that the percentage of whole bunches in the ferment brings to the party… a bright, slightly leafy note that ties with the fruit aromas perfectly. In the mouth there is plenty of vitality and energy. Hints of spice, dark chocolate, violets, leaf litter, roasting meats and beautifully judged oak present a wine that is all about the region and growing season. The wine finishes with boundless energy and purity, lingering nicely in the mouth, bright acidity and the gentle tug of ripe, fine tannin providing ample back bone as it trails off showing flavours of spice and ripe plums.
