Adelaide Contemporary design teams shortlisted

Adelaide Contemporary design teams shortlisted

A shortlist of six design teams has been compiled for the Adelaide Contemporary Design Competition, with a mix of local and international talent making up the list.

The competition, which received 107 applications from more than 500 firms from across the world in its first stage, will now provide those six teams with a brief to create deeper concept designs in anticipation of a public exhibition, and jury meeting in May 2018.

“It is inspiring to see how architects have taken collaboration to heart,” said the competition director Malcolm Reading in a release. “If there is any sure route to creating today’s sophisticated cultural buildings, then it is by selecting a team that prizes flair and cooperation.”

The choice of six teams was described as a unanimous selection from the selection panel chaired by Michael Lynch AO CBE and including representatives from Arts South Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) and the Office for Design and Architecture South Australia.

Adelaide Contemporary’s Finalist Design Teams:

– Adjaye Associates (London, UK) and BVN (Sydney, Australia)
– BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group (Copenhagen, Denmark) and JPE Design Studio (Adelaide, Australia)
– David Chipperfield Architects (London, UK) and SJB Architects (Sydney, Australia)
– Diller Scofidio + Renfro (New York, USA) and Woods Bagot (Adelaide, Australia)
– HASSELL (Adelaide & Melbourne, Australia) and SO-IL (New York, USA)
– Khai Liew (Adelaide, Australia), Office of Ryue Nishizawa (Tokyo, Japan) and Durbach Block Jaggers (Sydney, Australia)

All of the design teams included represent a mix of Australian and international talent, which comes as no surprise, as the State Government has stated an intention to commission a design from a world-leading architecture firm, but make sure that the Adelaide Contemporary is rooted in local significance.

“The six teams all showed a strong connection with Adelaide,” says AGSA director Nick Mitzevich, “and understood that our aim is not to create an off-the-peg architectural icon but a piece of Adelaide, an entity that will be sustainable and polymathic in the way it enhances the social, cultural and architectural fabric of the city.”

Each of the teams will now receive $90,000 to complete their designs, visit the Old Royal Adelaide Hospital site in January, and have until early April 2018 to submit a concept.
