Urban Beach

Urban Beach

by Renewal SA acting on behalf of the Riverbank Authority

Urban Beach was a summer demonstration project delivered by Renewal SA and the Riverbank Authority in partnership with local businesses. Located on Pinky Flat on the banks of the Torrens, it combined a family friendly beach environment with sports, leisure and recreational facilities as well as food, beverage and equipment hire outlets housed in brightly coloured beach huts.

Urban Beach was designed to be accessible, permeable, inviting and free to the public; integrated as part of the Riverbank, not simply placed there. Although licenced to serve alcohol it was neither fenced, gated, ticketed nor exclusive. In this way, the Urban Beach challenged notions of how the Adelaide Riverbank can be activated and utilised without blocking access, hindering public usage or detracting from its unique urban Park Land setting.

Between 35,000 to 40,000 visitors from all walks of life enjoyed the facility over two months and provided overwhelmingly positive feedback.
