Wine Review: Giant Steps 'Sensational' Lusatia Park Chardonnay

The Yarra Valley’s Lusatia Park Vineyard, planted on the free-draining red soils along the Lone Star Creek, has an enviable reputation as one of the region’s finest.

giant-steps-lusatia-park-chardonnay-adelaide-reviewGiant Steps consistently impress with their interpretation of the site. Wild ferment, large, seasoned French Oak, no battonage, no malolactic fermentation and no filtration, just a showcase of a great vineyard.

The Lusatia Park Chardonnay has everything you could hope for in a top Australian Chardonnay. There is no artefact. No Spinal Tap sulphides. It’s a wine of site and not of design.

There are pure aromas of juicy white peach, nectarine and citrus fruits under-scored by a hint of oatmeal, soft spice, almond blossom and perfectly poised, seasoned French oak. It’s a study in fruit purity and grace.

While the aromas are lovely and true, it is on the palate that the wine impresses most. There is a perfect weight and texture to its form in the mouth, the composition of fruit and acidity is pitch-perfect, with fantastic clarity and detail of flavour.

There is a porcelain-like grace to the wine’s glide across the palate and a tension and interplay between all its attributes that is just sensational. Great value.
