2017 SA Landscape Architecture Award Winners

2017 SA Landscape Architecture Award Winners

The 2017 SA Landscape Architecture Awards highlighted the quality of works being undertaken by landscape architects across South Australia. It was a chance to come together as an institute and celebrate the best in design, leadership and the realisation of quality public spaces across the state.

The 2017 awards program brought together a high quality collection of local projects, from large town parks in anticipation of new communities, newer greener spaces in older communities, to small spaces that support healing or learning. Each project demonstrated the important role landscape architects play in building stronger communities, through a focus on quality in design, collaboration and built outcomes.

Over the last two years, AILA SA has found our greatest impact in advocacy to government, in collaboration with our design partners, and in engagement with the public, when we articulate the role landscape architects can play in building stronger healthier communities.

Design quality is valued when we demonstrate how it builds stronger communities. Green infrastructure or environmental stewardship becomes a focus when it is framed through building stronger communities. Through shaping policy on climate change, the 30-Year plan for Greater Adelaide, the Planning Development and Infrastructure Act and more recently the Design Guidelines, we find the greatest attention when we frame our advice towards shaping stronger healthier communities.

Landscape architects are in a unique position and point in time locally to help facilitate crucial conversations between government, the design community and the public towards the planning, design and delivery of a better built environment that contributes to the liveability and vibrancy of South Australia.

The diversity of 28 entrants, across nine categories, reveals the many ways the profession of landscape architecture is committed to seeing South Australia advance, to build on the quality of life that has Adelaide recognised as the fifth most liveable city to live. Thank you to all who contributed to the success of the 2017 Awards and continuing to raise the profile of the profession across South Australia and the great work we do!

Ben Willsmore is the AILA SA President
