Presented by the South Australian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, the weekend’s awards ceremony recognised innovative local projects in commercial, residential and public architecture. The night’s biggest winner was Adelaide Botanic High School by Cox Architecture and Design Inc, which claimed no less than three awards with the Dr John Mayfied Award for Educational Architecture, the Robert Dickson Award for Interior Architecture and the Derrick Kendrick Award for Sustainable Architecture. Jury comments praised this new addition to the city’s north-east corner for its “endless visual connections to the botanic surroundings” and “dynamic layering of spaces and passive connectivity between public and private realms is delivered in a sophisticated manner”.

“The Adelaide Botanic High School exemplifies the high quality outcome that can be achieved when all parties invest in the process,” Australian Institute of Architects SA Chapter president Tony Giannone says. “This project is a community asset of lasting value – not just because of its sustainability credentials but also because it provides an example of how this State can provide state of the art educational facilities with outstanding flexibility and adaptability.”

Across town, the similarly ambitious University of South Australia Cancer Research Institute won the Jack McConnell Award for Public Architecture. Home to the University of South Australia’s Centre for Cancer Biology and School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences as well as innovative gallery and museum space MOD., the jury noted the project’s “refreshing and spatially well executed response to an otherwise difficult floor plate and site”, as well as its “consistent material palette and rhythm to the spaces successfully avoiding the common commercial language seen in many similar buildings”.

Cox Architecture’s work on Karen Rolton Oval at Narnungga Park 25 took out the City of Adelaide Prize, while the Grieve Gillet Andersen-designed St Mary’s Corner received both the Education Award and the publicly-voted City of Adelaide Prize (People’s Choice) – the poll of which was hosted by The Adelaide Review.
