Revered Melbourne singer-songwriter Stephen Cummings will return to Adelaide to launch his new album Nothing to be Frightened of. The former leader of The Sports is one of this country’s finest storytellers and solo artists, with a career that rivals more well-known Australian music identities. But Cummings has been in demand of late as a new documentary about his life, Don’t Throw Stones (based on his autobiography, Will it be Funny Tomorrow, Billy?) recently premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), and two new original Sports albums are due to be released by Warner this year, featuring 50 songs. Since leaving The Sports, Cummings has released 20 solo albums including his latest, Nothing to be Frightened of (out on Friday, September 5) his first since 2012’s Reverse Psychology. Cummings’ upcoming album was recorded and mixed by Shane O’Mara in two days; O’Mara also plays on for the record. The album is a “lucid commentary on humanity’s inevitable confrontation with loss and death. It has chutzpah, a seismic beat and a refusal to knuckle under to the idea that one has less time than one imagined,” according to the press release. Stephen Cummings plays The Wheatsheaf on Thursday, September 11. Nothing to be Frightened of is out on Friday, September 5. The full dates for his tour are below.
