Famed US reporter Bob Woodward takes on the Trump administration in his latest book, and much like its car crash subject, it’s quite impossible to look away – or put down.
Why the title Fear? Woodward quotes Trump as saying during his campaign “Real power is – I don’t even want to use the word – fear.” Actually, I think Trump had a muddled recollection of Stalin’s
remark “When it comes to power only fear is to be trusted.”
When you begin this book you fear you will never finish it. Why spend time reading about people you would never want to meet? Yet you go on reading. The grip is understated but uncompromising. Worse, you want Woodward to write a follow up to see what happens next! Of course, this is the Woodward who, with the late Carl Bernstein, wrote All the President’s Men and The Final Days (on the fall of Nixon) and 17 other books on American politics. Will he write another about Trump and his very un-merry men? Count on it. Fear stops halfway through 2018. Is Woodward hoping to finish with a bang: another presidential impeachment?
