There has been a lot of discussion in the media recently about personalised medicine and the benefits that it can provide patients, especially those diagnosed (or not diagnosed) with complex or rare conditions.
In this book Stirling local and former rheumatologist and pain physician Mark Awerbuch takes readers on an intensely personal journey, recounting his experiences from diagnosis to the many and varied forms of treatment for an aggressive form of leukaemia.
As a doctor, his ability to understand what is happening to him becomes a blessing and a curse. Ultimately, it is not his local medical connections that lead to his flight to Israel for possibly life-extending treatment but a serendipitous conversation on a plane between a caring friend and a stranger.
Awerbuch’s writing style is direct, bordering on blunt, but also very human. The book reads as much like a suspense thriller as a medical recount, making it difficult to put down.
