Two of the world’s greatest figureheads of science and reason – Brian Cox and James Randi – will appear separately at two special RiAus events in Adelaide. James Randi, the famed skeptic, illusionist and ‘enemy of deception’, will be in Adelaide to screen the biographical documentary An Honest Liar on Monday, December 1 at The Science Exchange (RiAus). The documentary is a feature on the “woo-woo” investigator known as The Amazing Randi. The 86-year-old will also discuss the film as part of a ‘fireside chat’ and Q+A after the screening. Professor Brian Cox will be part of a special broadcasting event at RiAus – In Class With Brian Cox – that will be available to stream to schools across Australia on Thursday, October 14. The British particle physicist, who works at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, is a Professor at the University of Manchester and is the former frontman of D:Ream, who had a global hit with Things Can Only Get Better. The host of many BBC shows left pop for science and is now one of the world’s most recognisable science communicators along with Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson. To register and submit student questions to Professor Cox, head to riaus.org.au/brian-cox. Randi, on the other hand, initially found fame as magician and escape artist before he began to investigate, criticise and demystify paranormal and pseudoscientific claims through books and documentaries such as The Truth About Uri Geller and The Faith Healers. Randi, and his organisation The Randi Education Foundation Fund, are responsible the One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge, which offers a million dollar prize to anyone who can prove supernatural ability under scientific testing criteria. It remains unclaimed.
