Royal Adelaide Hospital

Royal Adelaide Hospital

by Silver Thomas Hanley DesignInc (STHDI)

The new $2.3 billion Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), frames the theme of largely free-standing public buildings located on the North side of the North Terrace “boulevard”. In contrast to the regularity and density of the CBD grid, the RAH has been interpreted as a “hospital within a park”, with the extensive landscaping program core to the integrated design strategy, promoting wellness and engagement with the wider Adelaide community.

The state-of-the-art facility is situated on 3 hectares of parkland, and is presented as a collection of smaller, interconnected buildings, each with a slightly differing language and articulation. With extensive views to Public plazas, gardens and the greater Adelaide city skyline, the hospital’s design themes uniquely celebrate the relationship of people with the environment, celebrating cultural and indigenous identities through urban design, landscaping and the integration of artwork.
