Blessed with one of the greatest voices in popular music, soul and gospel singer Mavis Staples is set to return to Adelaide, playing the Governor Hindmarsh on Tuesday, March 31.

Originally finding fame with her family band The Staple Singers, Mavis Staples recently collaborated with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy for the acclaimed albums One True Vine and the Grammy Award-winning You Are Not Alone. The Staple Singers were one of the great acts of the legendary Stax label, which also housed Otis Redding, Booker T and the MGs and Sam & Dave.

The family band, which started as a gospel group, soundtracked the civil rights movement with the soul and R&B standards Respect Yourself and I’ll Take You There while Staple’s solo career hit new heights thanks to her collaborations with Jeff Tweedy.
