Pirate Life brews up new Portside music festival 'A Day On The Cans'

A new touring music festival will debut in Port Adelaide next year as Pirate Life Brewing prepares to host the first A Day On The Cans.

The Port has been home to a variety of music and arts festivals in recent years, from the annual South Australian leg of St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival to the Semaphore Music Festival. This latest addition will see the waterside warehouse currently home to Adelaide craft beer success story Pirate Life Brewing transformed into a music venue on March 30.

Perth hip hop mainstay Drapht will headline the inaugural Day On The Cans, along with Melbourne rock acts The Delta Riggs and Press Club – the latter having just won many new Adelaide fans at the weekend’s Stonecutters Festival – and WA’s Southern River Band. The festival will also includes a fresh batch of emerging South Australian acts in Wing Defence, Madura Green and Oscar the Wild, alongside longrunning punk group Young Offenders. Rapper and producer Trials (Funkoars, A.B. Original) will also be taking on MC duties for the event.

“The Port revival is in full swing and we can’t wait to show people what we have done with the old Dalgety Wool building,” says Pirate Life’s Jack Cameron of the news. “It’s a pretty bloody cool space to throw a music festival.”

It isn’t the first time Pirate Life Brewing’s strong association with the music scene has been on show, having collaborated with the Hilltop Hoods’ record label Golden Era Records on their own line of craft beer in 2016.

In addition to the music A Day On The Cans will include a variety of food offerings (Beer & BBQ Festival producers Aaron Sandow and Gareth Lewis are both partners in the new festival), tattooing and markets. Street artist Vans the Omega will also be on hand to paint two of the site’s large scale water tanks as part of the Port’s Wonderwalls street art festival. It goes without saying that there will also be a lot of beer.

Much like the winery-based concert series the festival’s title draws sly allusion to, the group plan to take A Day On The Cans nationally to showcase other breweries around Australia through that time-honoured Australian pastime of tinnies and tunes.
