Unsound Adelaide draws blood with 2018 lineup

Now in its sixth year, the South Australian chapter of the Polish experimental music festival will return in December with some impressive exclusives including electronic duo and regular Björk collaborators Matmos, Queens artist and musician Eartheater and producer Yves Tumour, who inspired breathless reviews last month with brand new album Safe In The Hands of Love.

Reyjavik-based Ben Frost leads a strong Australian contingent that includes Sydney producer Ptwiggs and prolific Melbourne house star Roza Terenzi. Frost’s exclusive Unsound set with visuals from Denmark’s MFO marks a rare appearance by the composer in his home country, having released the critically acclaimed The Centre Cannot Hold last year in between scoring Nordic noir TV hits Fortitude and Neftlix’s Dark. 

Audiences will also be unlikely to forget Australian noise artist Lucas Abela’s potentially bloody performance on December 14, which will see Abela create sound using a sheet of amplified glass held to his face, pushing the festival’s cutting edge manifesto to a very literal extreme.

Having experimented with a new location in the Botanic Gardens’ Bicentennial Conservatory in 2017, this year’s program sees the festival split between its original home at Queen’s Theatre and the more intimate club setting of Rundle Street’s Sugar. Long a haven for underground musicians and producers the world over, Unsound will see the nightclub host emerging international acts that include Canadian producer Ciel and Malaysia’s Tzusing.
